If you've got a uPVC or composite door, this is the single most important lock upgrade you can make — and it's cheaper than you'd think.
If your front door is uPVC or composite, it almost certainly uses a euro cylinder — and the older, basic ones have a well-known weakness. The good news: upgrading to a proper anti-snap cylinder is one of the cheapest, highest-impact things you can do for your home's security.
What "lock snapping" is
Lock snapping is a technique where a burglar snaps a standard euro cylinder in two with simple tools and is through the door in under a minute, often without much noise. It became common because so many uPVC doors were fitted with cheap, unrated cylinders. It's the reason you'll sometimes hear of break-ins with "no sign of forced entry".
The three protections to look for
- Anti-snap — the cylinder has sacrificial sections so that if attacked, it breaks in a way that keeps the door locked rather than opening it. This is the big one.
- Anti-bump — resists "bumping", where a specially cut key is tapped to jump the pins.
- Anti-drill — hardened pins and plates stop a drill chewing through the mechanism.
- Anti-pick — defeats manipulation of the pins with picks.
The cylinders we fit for this are usually marked with a 3-star kitemark, or a 1-star cylinder paired with 2-star security handles — both routes give you the full "snap-safe" protection insurers and police-approved schemes look for.
Is it a big job?
No — for most doors it's a quick cylinder swap, measured to sit flush, with new keys handed over the same visit. You don't need a whole new door or mechanism, just the right cylinder fitted properly. It's one of those rare upgrades that's both inexpensive and genuinely meaningful.
We carry anti-snap cylinders in all common sizes on the van — see lock changes & upgrades, or after a break-in we can fit one the same day.
