When a lock change becomes urgent

• The door will not lock at all. If the building cannot be secured, it should be treated as urgent.
• A key has been lost with address details. Changing the cylinder retires the missing key immediately.
• The lock has been forced or damaged. Even if it still turns, it may not be protecting the door properly.
• A tenant, staff member or previous key holder should no longer have access. Regaining key control is the point of the visit.

What a locksmith should check first

A good visit starts with diagnosis, not drilling. On a uPVC or composite door, the problem may be a euro cylinder, a misaligned door, or the multipoint mechanism behind the handle. On a timber door, it may be a mortice lock, nightlatch or keep issue. The right repair depends on which part has failed.

If the lock can be repaired safely, that may be enough. If the cylinder is worn, insecure, incorrectly sized or no longer trusted because of a missing key, changing it is usually the cleaner answer.

After a break-in or attempted break-in

Do not rely on a lock just because the key still turns. Look for a loose handle, bent keep, cracked frame, proud cylinder, scrape marks, or a door that now needs extra force to close. Those signs can mean the hardware has moved or weakened.

If there has been damage, it is sensible to ask about anti-snap cylinders, correct cylinder sizing and whether the door alignment needs adjusting at the same time. The aim is to leave the door secure, not simply replace one weak part with another.

What to have ready when you call

• The town and postcode area, especially if you are between Chertsey, Addlestone, Weybridge or Egham.
• Whether the door is open, locked shut, stuck closed, or closed but not secure.
• The door type: uPVC, composite, timber, aluminium shopfront or communal entrance.
• Whether any key is missing, broken, stolen, or still inside the property.

Can it wait until tomorrow?

If the door locks cleanly, all keys are accounted for, and the issue is only a planned upgrade, it can usually be booked normally. If the door will not secure, someone is locked out, or a missing key could identify the address, it is an emergency locksmith job.
