A good security survey is not about scaring you into buying everything. It is a practical walk-round of doors, windows, keys and weak points.
A home security survey should feel practical, not dramatic. The aim is to find the weak points that are easy to fix, prioritise the ones that matter, and avoid spending money where the existing setup is already sound. For most homes, the biggest improvements come from doors, cylinders, key control and the forgotten side or rear access points.
External doors come first
We check the front, back, side and garage access doors before anything else. That includes the lock type, cylinder rating, handle security, strike plate, frame condition and whether the door actually closes and locks cleanly. A lock can be excellent on paper but still underperform if the door is warped or out of alignment.
Insurance and standards
For timber doors, we look for British Standard markings where your policy expects them. For uPVC and composite doors, we check cylinder size and anti-snap protection. If the wording in your insurance mentions approved locks, our front-door lock guide explains what that usually means.
Windows, patio doors and overlooked access
- Window locks, especially on ground-floor and easily reachable windows.
- Patio and French doors, including the quality of locking points and handles.
- Garage, shed and gate locks, which often protect tools as well as access routes.
- Side returns, shared alleys and dark rear entrances.
- Outbuildings that contain ladders, tools or bikes.
Key control matters
We also ask who has keys. Have you moved recently? Did a cleaner, contractor, tenant or previous owner have access? Are there old spares with neighbours? A lock can be technically secure while the key control is poor. In that case, a cylinder change may be the simplest fix.
What you get from it
The useful output is a short priority list: what needs doing now, what can wait, and what is not worth spending money on. Sometimes that means anti-snap cylinders on two doors. Sometimes it means adjusting a stiff uPVC door before it fails. Sometimes it means leaving most of the setup alone and just sorting keys.
