Garages and sheds are easy to overlook, but they often hold the bikes, tools and ladders that burglars actually want.
Most people think about the front door first, then forget the shed, garage and side gate. Burglars do the opposite. Outbuildings often hold bikes, tools, ladders and garden equipment, and a weak shed lock can also give someone the tools they need to attack the house.
Start with the door and frame
A good padlock on a rotten shed door is still a weak setup. Before upgrading the lock, check the door, hinges, frame and fixings. If screws are exposed, timber is soft, or the hasp can be levered off easily, the hardware needs reinforcing as well as replacing.
What works well
- Closed-shackle padlocks that leave less metal exposed to bolt cutters.
- Heavy hasps and staples fixed with coach bolts rather than small screws.
- Garage door defenders for older up-and-over garage doors.
- Ground anchors for bikes, motorcycles and expensive tools.
- Anti-snap cylinders on side doors, integral garage doors and uPVC access doors.
Do not forget hinges and side gates
Shed and garage security often fails away from the lock. Hinges can be unscrewed, side gates can be lifted, and rear access can be hidden from the road. Hinge bolts, better gate locks and a simple motion light can make the easy route much less inviting.
Keyed alike can make life easier
If you have several outbuildings, side doors or gates, it may be possible to reduce the key mess with keyed-alike cylinders or a simpler padlock setup. Convenience matters because security only works if people actually use it every day.
When to call a locksmith
Call if a garage side door has a weak cylinder, if an up-and-over door has no secondary security, if a shed lock keeps failing, or if you want to review the whole route from street to back door. The best fix is usually a small set of practical upgrades rather than one expensive product.
