If the last working key has gone missing, the right fix depends on whether the door is open, locked, secure, and who may have found the key.
Losing a spare key is annoying. Losing the only key to a front door, flat entrance, garage or office is different. In Ascot, Windsor, Virginia Water and Bracknell, we handle these calls in two ways: recover access where needed, then decide whether a new key is enough or whether the lock should be changed for security.
If the door is locked and you are outside
Treat it as a lockout first. A local locksmith will ask what type of door and lock you have, whether there is another entrance, and whether the key is definitely lost rather than inside the property. The aim is always non-destructive entry where possible, then a sensible decision about the lock once you are back in.
When key cutting may be enough
- The door is open and you still have one original key to copy.
- The missing key is known to be inside the property or safely accounted for.
- The lock is modern, smooth, correctly fitted and not a security concern.
- You need extra keys for family, staff, cleaners or a neighbour you trust.
When changing the lock is the safer option
If the key has been lost outside with anything that identifies the address, or you simply cannot know who may have it, changing the cylinder gives you control again. It retires the missing key immediately, so anyone who finds it cannot use it later.
A lock change is also sensible if the current cylinder is old, has no anti-snap rating, sticks when turned, or sits proud of the handle. In that case, the lost key is not the only issue; the hardware is due an upgrade anyway.
What to check before calling
- Which door the key opens: front, back, garage, communal entrance or office.
- Whether the door is currently open, closed, locked or unable to lock.
- Whether you have any key to copy, even if it is worn.
- Whether the lock is a euro cylinder, mortice lock, nightlatch or padlock.
Useful upgrades while you are sorting it
If the key is for a uPVC or composite front door, ask about anti-snap cylinders. If several doors use different keys, it may be possible to key them alike so one key opens more than one door. If keys keep going missing in a shared household or small workplace, a digital lock may also be worth discussing for a side or staff entrance.
