After lost keys, a failed cylinder or an attempted break-in, the urgent job is to make the door secure again. The right anti-snap lock upgrade depends on the door, cylinder size and who may still have keys.

When an emergency callout should include a security upgrade
- Keys have been lost with a way to identify the property. Getting back in is only step one; old keys should stop working.
- The cylinder has been damaged or forced. A like-for-like replacement may leave the same weak point in place.
- The lock is old, loose or sticking out past the handle. Poor cylinder sizing can make a door easier to attack.

What anti-snap locks actually solve
Most uPVC and composite doors use a euro cylinder. An anti-snap cylinder is designed so that, if attacked, a sacrificial section breaks away while the working part stays protected. It does not make the whole door invincible, but it is a sensible upgrade on many external doors when fitted to the correct size.
The sizing matters. A cylinder that protrudes too far can undermine the point of the upgrade, and a door with tired handles, loose fixings or a strained multipoint mechanism may need more than a cylinder swap.
Lost keys, break-ins and lock changes
If keys are missing, copied, or held by someone who should no longer have access, a lock change is usually the cleanest way to reset control. If the door uses a suitable euro cylinder, changing the cylinder can often be enough without replacing the full mechanism.
After an attempted break-in, the locksmith should also look for frame damage, handle damage and signs that the door has shifted under force. A new cylinder will not help if the door cannot throw and hold properly.
Emergency or planned visit?
Treat it as urgent if the property cannot be secured, someone is locked out, a key has snapped in the lock, or the lock has been damaged. If you still have safe access and the door locks properly, you may be able to book a planned lock upgrade instead.
